There was to have been six JL's, however JL405 never entered service and was rebuilt as a GL. JL406 was in service for a relatively short time before being withdrawn and stripped to become part of the GL rebuild program

They were fitted with the English Electric 12SVT engine developing 1290 Horsepower for Traction. Loco 1225 is a rebuild of 1208 and parts from 1252 & 1253 are also used. The loco was also changed from a Carbody style to a Hood unit. Therefore 1225 does not truely represent the 1200 class as built. Unfortunately I do not have any shots of any as built 1200 class. They are powered by an Alco 251B engine developing 1050hp (950hp for traction in generator). This class can be broken down into Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 models, however there are only minor differences between each. The 48 class is one of the most versatile units employed in NSW as they can be used on the lightest of branch lines to mainline work on heavy coal trains and on occasions passenger services. The first unit entered service on 25th January 1969. These locomotives are fitted with a GM-645E Engine rated at 2200hp with 2000hp being available for traction. 42220 was rebuilt with Super Series wheelslip control system and re-entered service in July 1980. As a result 42220 virtually became the prototype for the 81 class. Units of this class are now operated by Interail and Australian Railroad Group. On the 2nd July 1988 all eight locos were assembled at Broadmeadow Loco for photographic purposes. The Photograph shows 7100 at the Chullora Workshops open day in 1987. 7100 is normally kept at the Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere as an exhibit only Thursday 1 January 1970: The 71 Class Electric consisted of a single Locomotive 7100.
